Classroom in the Hospital is aimed at helping high school students interested in
pursuing careers in the medical field. Students spend a day in a local hospital
and learn about the general skills and competencies needed for success working in
hospital settings, as well as the nature of the work, educational requirements,
woking conditions, and earnings specific to each occupation. A tour of some of
the departments within the hospital is also included. Since 2000, when the program
began, about 270 students have been involved. The program is held several times
each year, at Berwick Hospital Center and The Bloomsburg Hospital.
This year, Classroom in the Hospital was held at the Berwick Hospital Center on 14 May 2008. Students from Central Columbia High School, Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School, Danville Area High School, and Southern Columbia Area High School participated in the program, and Cheryl Seidel from Danville chaperoned the event. The students heard from the following presenters: CEO John Kristel, Family Practice Physician Joshua Uy, Director of Pharmacy Toni McDonald, Director of Outpatient/Women's Services Megan Shetterly, Interim Director of Rehabilitation Carolyn Engdahl-Hines, Hospital Dietician Carrie Edwards, Director of Case Management Linda Zaneski, Chief Nursing Officer Deb Morton, and Obstetrics/Gynecology Dr. Maria Asevedo. Christina Shaw from the public relations office coordinated the speakers. The day was very informative and enjoyable! |
